The World Is Your Office: 12 Reasons To Work Online And Travel Always

by Cassie Torrecillas & Shay Brown

Two years ago, we were recent graduates trying to navigate the “real world," and the thought of living our lives away in cubicles (unsurprisingly) just wasn't cutting it.

When did graduating mean only living for the weekends? Why do we dread Mondays and desperately wait for our two weeks of vacation a year?

After a semester studying in France and an epic backpacking trip through Europe, we wanted to continue curing our wanderlust, which is a pretty unrealistic and unaffordable dream for recent graduates.

We longed to chase freedom, independence and adventure, and we craved to build a life and business of our own.

So, as ambitious and entrepreneurial spirits, we designed a plan. Our vision was simple: Build online businesses that provide the freedom to work online and travel the world simultaneously.

We began relentlessly pursuing our visions.

Fast forward two years later: At 23-years-old, we’re now running successful online businesses and working with clients from the UK to Dubai, which gives us the freedom to work from anywhere in the world.

Some days we’re working from a local coffee plantation in Guatemala or a quirky cafe in Bangkok and other days, we're in Thailand or a blissful beach by the Caribbean Sea in Mexico.

Most importantly, we wake up each morning with a passion for life, an excitement for our businesses and a driving desire to see and experience the world, learn about new cultures and embark on exciting adventures.

Isn’t this what the “real world” should be?

We are a generation of self-starters, go-getters and dream-chasers with the power of the Internet at our fingertips. So, why are we choosing to live in structures we don’t love?

Now, the choice is yours.

If you’ve been thinking about ditching your cubical to globe trot around the world (all while making that buck online), these reasons will finally lead you to purchase your one-way ticket to freedom.

So, grab your BFF and get ready for the journey of a lifetime:

1. You can afford to travel (and keep traveling).

The primary excuse most people give for not being able to travel is not having enough money.

Because you’re probably not a trust fund baby or a lottery winner, you’re responsible for busting your butt to fund your travels.

By working online, you don’t need to kill your soul slaving away in an office for months at a time just to save for that one trip.

Say goodbye to fluorescent lights and weak coffee! You bring in your income while you travel, which allows you to keep the epic adventures going.

2. You have the freedom to work from anywhere that has WiFi.

Yes, anywhere. Do piña coladas and beach bungalows inspire you to tackle your work? With your laptop in hand, your “office” possibilities are endless.

Whether that’s a tropical hut off the coast of Southeast Asia or a cozy cafe in Florence, you just have to find a strong connection and get working.

3. You no longer have to choose between work or travel.

The big post-grad debate is now over. You no longer need to decide whether to solely focus on your career or ditch the status quo to embark on an adventure around the world. Now you have the ability and the freedom to do both: Cure your wanderlust and ignite your inner entrepreneurial spirit.

4. Your ability to communicate has never been easier.

In today’s world, communicating around the globe has never been easier because of apps like Skype, Viber and WhatsApp.

Not only does this help you stay in touch with friends back home, but it also allows you to quickly and efficiently work remotely with clients. Jump on Google Hangouts to discuss a new project or video chat via Skype for an “in-person” meeting.

5. Your client pool is the world itself.

The world is now your client pool. With the click of a button, you can expand your reach and access clients around the globe.

You can find yourself working with a startup in London, a fashion company in Dubai or a tech company in Australia. The possibilities are truly endless.

6. You can work from rad co-working spaces around the world.

Surround yourself with other inspiring, location-independent entrepreneurs while working from a creative co-working space.

Many offer unique and awesome features to enhance your workday, like The Surf Office in California, which has stunning beach views, or The Hive in Bangkok, which offers massages while you work to take your stresses away.

7. You have the flexibility to travel anywhere you want, when you want.

Because your work isn’t dependent on a physical location, you can book spontaneous trips to attend SXSW in Austin, see your favorite band in Barcelona or experience the famous lantern festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

As long as your clients are happy, you don’t have to request time off to head out on your next adventure.

8. You can design your own lifestyle.

Design your life and structure your workday to make time for things that bring you joy.

Start your day with a yoga class on the beach or enjoy a relaxing afternoon sunbathing by the pool. Create your ideal day and bring it to life.

9. You have minimal business expenses.

Running an online business means you have minimal overhead, allowing for more of your money to go toward traveling.

Compared to running a large brick-and-mortar business, the cost of running a digital company is minimal.

All you need is your laptop and, depending on your industry, a few key tools to be in business.

10. You can easily find accommodations around the world.

Ever wanted to sleep in a gorgeous clock tower overlooking London? Well, now you can.

Thanks to amazing companies, like Airbnb, it’s super easy and affordable to find unique apartments to rent around the world while you explore your new city.

Whether you opt for a cozy cabin or a swanky loft, you’ll get an authentic experience living like a local.

11. You can change your environment, which will increase your productivity.

It’s no secret that switching it up every now and then allows us to challenge our thinking, raise our productivity and reduce procrastination.

Switching your work environment will boost your creativity, give you a new perspective and re-energize your workflow.

Working online gives you the luxury to choose your working environment daily.

12. You have the freedom to make your own hours.

You have total flexibility now that you’re your own boss. You can choose to easily incorporate sightseeing, adventures and activities into your work day, whether that means taking a lunch break to explore the street markets in Vietnam, run the Haiku Stairs in Oahu or wander the temples in Bali. Arrange your work schedule to allow time to pursue your travel goals and check things off your bucket list.
