Get Out Of Your Cubicle Before You Waste Your Life

by Ashley Fern

There are few worse feelings in the world than being trapped inside a cubicle. As your fourth, fifth and sixth alarms go off in the morning, you are already dreading the boring day that lies ahead of you. Why not wake up in the morning eager and wanting to work? I took the corporate route and it took all my strength not to gouge out my eyeballs on a daily basis. Removing yourself from the world of the cubicle is a daring feat, but the rewards are endless.

“Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.”

Unfortunately, as a generation we were raised with the idea that if we go to school, get a typical job and make a lot of money, we will be happy. Happiness should be a reflection of your personal ambition and success, not by what kind of car you have in your driveway. I would rather be struggling to make ends meet, working towards something I love than relishing in money working at a company that makes me miserable.

The longer you remain in a corporation, the harder it will be to escape. The environment a cubicle offers is inherently problematic. But do not fret, you are not alone. We live in a society where we work to live, but shouldn’t we live to work? Give yourself something exciting to look forward to when you wake up. The 9-5 cycle becomes so repetitive and can drive you mad. Do not become a corporate slave; you need to go out and make your dreams come true.

Let’s take a look at some of the aspects this adventure will offer you…

Control

Life is too short to be doing something that does not make you happy. Self-employment is the ultimate form of control. You are putting your happiness in your own hands. Creating something on your own fosters pride and satisfaction. You are in control of what happens to you, you make your own rules. The success of your life should be on your own terms. Happiness is your choice.

Variety

How can you grow as a person if you are stuck doing the same meaningless tasks on a day-to-day basis? This type of environment will literally suck the soul out of you. Living your life in suspense is exhilarating; variety is what keeps things entertaining and exciting. Spending eight hours trapped in a small space that somewhat resembles a padded cell is a difficult place to remain sane. Switch it up and try something new.

“There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.”

Unpredictability

The repetitive, mundane life a cubicle offers you is not one of excitement. Life is full of surprises and opportunities; this is where happiness will manifest. You know where it will not flourish? Within the restraints of a 4x4 cube. Routine behavior will numb your mind whereas unpredictability will engage it. “Happiness is a state of activity,” as Aristotle has so famously said.

Freedom

Get off the corporate treadmill and go experience life the way it should be. The claustrophobic environment is not conducive to exploration. Entrepreneurship is the future and our generation is at the forefront. Go out and explore each and every opportunity that comes your way. If you are trapped at a desk, you run the risk of missing out on all the beauty the world has to offer. If you want to live a happy life, you need to tie it to a goal and not to people or material possessions.
