It's Not Technology, It's You: How Technology Can Save Us From Ourselves

by Liz Rae

I hear a lot of people talking about how awful technology is and how it has driven us apart as people. I've been hearing a lot of this lately, in particular, and sometimes, I find myself thinking the same thing.

I hear about how people don't communicate face-to-face anymore, and how we all find love on the Internet. I hear about how we only know how to solve problems with technology and not with our minds.

But, is it really technology? Is that really the problem? Or, is our problem that we have become so comfortable with it, we have forgotten how to step outside of our comfort zones and begin having conversations again?

Sometimes, I think we forget about the amazing things technology has done for us.

Yes, it has also driven some us apart, but it has also driven so many of us closer together.

It has reunited friendships around the world, rekindled old loves and helped us donate to more charities and small business all over the globe.

So is it really a bad thing, or are we just forgetting the positives about it?

While there are apps like Tinder that don't always bring meaning to our lives and apps like Candy Crush that cause a distraction, there are also hundreds and thousands of other ways technology can save our society, one person at a time.

We should use technology to inspire us, not hurt us. No matter which brand you buy or which company you support, all technology can bring good to the world.

1. Technology can connect the world.

Technology has shown it has the power to connect us to what is going on around the world.

Yes, sometimes the news doesn't show us all of the important information. How many times a day do we hear the worst stories on the news or stories about things that seem irrelevant?

But how many times a day do we also try to seek out the news that is important and powerful?

We are so lucky to have the ability to learn about everything going on, and we are so lucky to be able to have the power to use the knowledge we have to change the things we see on the news.

We know more than we ever have before, and it's our time to use technology to help others around the world who are suffering.

2. Technology can reunite us.

There have been countless times on Facebook when people have reconnected with people they once knew, met or loved.

Technology has given us the ability to see our old flames and find our parents.

And, yes, sometimes Facebook and Twitter and all the other social networking sites out there get annoying, and sometimes people post too much information, but all of these sites have also given us the ability to stay in contact with the people we love most.

Instead of focusing on the crazy things people can post, we should focus on being happy for others and using technology as a way to continue learning and growing together as humans, no matter where we are in the world.

3. Technology can bring the ones we love most closer.

I have to say, there are times I get annoyed at seeing tons of sappy posts about people's loved ones. And, yes, sometimes people can be overbearing with it.

But, beyond that, I always have to use it as a reminder that without all of this, we may not be able to stay close to the ones we love.

Whether it be sending a Facebook message, sending a quick text or even calling through a free calling app, technology has given us the ability to stay close to the ones we love and to share the love we have for others.

So, yes, it may be annoying to see tons of Facebook PDA, but all of this PDA is what brings us closer together.

4. Technology can literally save us.

Think of the medical industry: Where would we be without tablets? Where would we be without all of the advances in computers?

We have the power to save even more people, more quickly than ever before. We have the ability to find more information, solve more diseases, find more cures and to give doctors the best tools in the world to save people.

Technology has given us the chance to travel the globe and to bring medical attention to people most in need.

Maybe all of the changes in technology are confusing and difficult, but once we learn them, we have the power to save so many more people than we ever have been able to before.

5. Technology can make us smarter.

From getting an entire degree to learning another language to perfecting how to play an instrument, technology has given us an entire body of knowledge in the palms of our hands.

At any moment, we can learn anything we want, and we can use this to become better people. We have access to everything we could ever want to know.

I can't think of anything more exciting than having tons of recipes at my fingertips and to be able to learn another language so I can communicate better when I am traveling.

We have the power to be more efficient than ever before.

For some people, having access to technology isn't an affordable option. But, for those who it is, we have to make the most out of our access in the most positive way.
