The average "Game of Thrones" fan will utter the phrase "Wait, who is that again?" approximately 33 times over the course of a single season. And this makes sense if you consider the hundreds of characters who play active roles in the Seven Kingdoms.
This is even truer for the people who spent the first five seasons complaining about the changes the showrunners made to the source material -- because everyone knows you're not really a fan of the books unless you tell people you've read them before they've had a chance to ask.
Based on the work of someone with more time on his hands than I'll ever have in my entire life, there are over 2,300 different characters who are mentioned by name over the course of George RR Martin's five "Game of Thrones" novels.
Martin's character-naming strategy seems to involve adding or removing random letters in fairly normal names to make them seem more exotic, so I decided to see if I could come up with a few of my own by employing similar strategies.
Take the quiz below and see if you can tell the difference between real "Game of Thrones" characters and names I made up.
