At first glance, you may be thinking to yourself, "Wow, these are really beautiful photos of food."

Well, guess what? YOU'RE WRONG. These aren't beautiful photos of food at all. Why? Because these mouthwatering portraits of food are all actually hand-painted masterpieces.

In a recent series by Joël Penkman, the New Zealand-based artist painted portraits of delicious foods that will make you rummage through your pantry like a straight-up savage.

In an interview with Mashable, Penkman revealed,

I do like the familiarity of food as a subject, it is something everyone can relate to. It can hold memories, tell stories, explore national and local identity, and make us hungry. It is a fun, playful subject that makes people smile.

Why, yes. Yes, it is!

As a matter of fact, I can't contain my excitement (or growling tummy) while scrolling through these photos. Who would have thought these life-like paintings could be so hunger-inducing?!
