The N.W.A biopic "Straight Outta Compton" is one of the hottest movies of the summer and reached number one at the box office this weekend.
If you're a hip-hop lover, it's a must-watch. However, one place you won't be able to see the film is the city where the film is set: Compton.
It's not that there are no movie theaters in town screening it; there are no movie theaters in Compton at all.
According to CBS Los Angeles, USC Professor Manuel Pastor explained the problem,
It's a low income area, it's been heavily dis-invested in. When you live in a community that doesn't have that kind of retail, it's a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued.
While this is an upsetting problem, some good news did come from all of this.
With the success of the film, there's now talk about a new entertainment district being built in Compton that would include a 16-screen multiplex.
