In A New Relationship? Here's What You Should Stop Worrying About
Being in a serious committed relationship has its perks, but it also can be very stressful. We tend to stress over things like why our significant other isn't responding right away, why they are acting so weird after last night or why they aren't seeing things my way.
We think way too much into the little things because of this natural default setting that we all have. Some are better than others at turning this off, but when it comes to relationships, especially ones that are beginning to get serious, we tend to think the worst about every little thing.
The truth of the matter is that all the little things that we stress about our partner doing when it comes to a relationship really are not that big of a deal. These minimal issues become a big deal when we allow them to consume the entire relationship.
A relationship can't get serious if you are doubting every little thing your SO does and stressing over it.
No one said being a stress-free person, without any worries and all the trust in the world in your partner was easy, but being that person does make your life in a relationship a whole lot easier.
1. Your SO doesn't post about you online.
Automatic default worry: Why doesn't my SO want to be seen with me? Everyone uses social media, they must be embarrassed to be seen with me. I must be the "side chick" since there is zero evidence anywhere that we are together."
The truth of the matter: Yes, social media has completely taken over our worlds, but it's not everything. Social media seems to do nothing but cause problems, honestly. It's a big black hole of "he posted, she posted." And with every post, you give people the chance to be in your business and talk. It's your relationship, not yours and 1,500 of your Facebook friends. If your SO is keeping social media out of the picture, it's actually for the best.
Keeping your relationship off of social media keeps other people out of it, and that's how a serious relationship should be.
2. Your SO doesn't text you all the time.
Automatic default worry: They must be talking to someone else right now. They're probably who knows where doing who knows what with who knows who. What else could they possibly be doing right now? I know they always have their phone on them."
The truth of the matter: Texting is awful. Words can easily be misinterpreted, and I don't know about you, but I like to talk — a lot. My fingers would fall off if I took the time to type the novel I wanted to say, and I'm sure my SO doesn't want to read a novel mid-day. People are busy, we all have jobs, lives and business that needs to be handled. A serious relationship isn't built off of the conversation you have using emojis the entire day because let's face it: What is there really to talk about 24/7 over text? Your SO isn't with someone else. They're living their day-to-day life like a normal person without their face in a phone.
3. You think your SO's family doesn't like you.
Automatic default worry: Did their mom really just look at me like that? Is there something on my face? No. She definitely does not like me. Look at the way she's looking at me.
The truth of the matter: Regardless of what anyone tells you, family is the most important thing for the majority of people you meet. How could it not be? If your SO's family did not like you, they would not be bringing you around them, because that would just be awkward and uncomfortable for both of you. Most importantly, if his family did not approve of you, your SO would not be with you. Family opinions are important.
