At San Diego Comic-Con, Sprouse and Reinhart raised eyebrows when they were caught not-so-subtly holding each other’s hands during an interview with TV Line. Following Comic-Con, People reported that Sprouse and Reinhart were spotted kissing — and Reinhart even wore her rumored BF’s sweater. (Intrigue!)
At the time, they stayed mum about the rumors, but Reinhart did comment on the cast’s close relationship a few months earlier. “I can’t even describe how lucky we are,” she told People in January 2017. “I feel like this is rare, what we have with each other is rare.”
Sprouse and Reinhart made their romance red carpet official at the Met Gala in May 2018. Although they still didn’t technically confirm they were an item, a picture’s worth a thousand words (especially when it’s taken at the Met Gala).
A few months after their red carpet moment, Reinhart remained tight-lipped on their status. She told Harper’s Bazaar, “I'm not okay talking about my relationship. I'm not going to tell you my love story. That's just not appropriate right now.”
At the 2018 Teen Choice Awards, Riverdale was a major winner, taking home the trophy for Best TV Series: Drama. Of course, it was also a great photo opp for Sprouse and Reinhart, who were officially considered an item post-Met Gala.
In March 2019, Sprouse and Reinhart attended the permiere of his film Five Feet Apart. The typically reserved couple even served up some PDA on the red carpet. They embraced, and Reinhart gave Sprouse a kiss on the cheek.
Months earlier, Reinhart explained their privacy. "I think it's just that I'm so protective over it. It's not something the world needs to know about, because if you give them anything, they are just going to want more,” she told Who What Wear in October 2018. “A relationship is a very intimate thing, and I want it to be between me and him, not me, him, and the world."
According to Sprouse, their relationship was inevitable. "We legitimately could not stay away from one another," he told LA Times in 2019. Sadly, in January 2020, they split up. “I think if I had loved myself a little more, I probably would have left [my relationship with Reinhart] a little earlier,” Sprouse said in a March 2023 Call Her Daddy episode.
