Y2K fashion is having a major moment. Everything from low-rise jeans to platform flip-flops were plucked from the ‘00s style archives and are now staples in the 2020s. One of the latest Y2k fashion trends making a statement in 2022: butterfly crop tops and bras.

Mariah Carey was among the first to break out the iconic butterfly crop top in 2000, at VH1 Divas 2000: A Tribute to Diana Ross, three years after Mimi’s sixth studio album, Butterfly. This solidified the butterfly as a Y2K fashion must.

Clearly, butterflies were big on the 2022 festival scene, as dancehall singer Shenseea also donned a sparkly, green version of it for a Coachella party.

You can’t say Dua Lipa doesn’t live for the fluttering insect. In November 2021, she was spotted on her way to an Adele concert sporting a pink butterfly bra top and skirt; more recently, she was seen in a Vogue video, adorning a sequined butterfly crop top, similar to Carey’s ‘00s ‘fit.

Although she already got a shoutout for her love of the big winged critters and it’s not a shirt, Dua Lipa’s butterfly gown from the 2021 Grammys deserves an honorable mention. As it’s dripping in crystals, it doesn’t get much more decadent than this.

But let us take a moment to pay tribute to true originator of this style. Back in 1974, Cher wore a version of a butterfly bra top with a sequined, bug appliqué to really glitz it up. Truly legen — wait for it — dary.
