Meet Kavi Sharma, American Girl’s 2023 Girl Of The Year

On Dec. 29, American Girl unveiled its first Indian American doll. The 2023 Girl of the Year, Kavi Sharma, lives in New Jersey and loves singing, dancing, and performing. Kavi dreams of starring on Broadway one day.

Kavi’s Broadway aspirations began when her grandmother took her to see Wicked on Broadway for her 12th birthday, and she regularly writes her own songs.

She also takes classical Indian and Bollywood dance lessons, and she loves celebrating Diwali.

A team of advisors helped to create Kavi’s story with authentic experiences, including choreographer Rina Shah and a 13-year-old Indian American girl named Arusha. American Girl enlisted New York Times bestselling author Varsha Bajaj to write the novel It’s Showtime, Kavi.

Kavi’s story is important because of “all the young readers who will see parts of their lives represented,” Bajaj said in the press release. She showcases Indian culture through “dance, yoga traditions, food, clothing, and magical festivals like Diwali and Holi.”

As for the doll itself, the 18-inch Kavi has “brown eyes, medium skin tone, and layered dark-brown hair styled in a half ponytail,” according to the press release. She also comes with Gen Z-approved ‘fits and accessories.

Kavi has an adorable dog named Scamper who wears a pink ribbon collar and leash. Kavi thinks Scamper is “the smartest dog in the world.”

The Girl of the Year collection includes options like Kavi’s stunning performing outfits — Bollywood and Broadway — and accessories, a paperback journal, and the hardcover novel.
