The original Hocus Pocus has been as spooky season staple for generations. The new sequel, Hocus Pocus 2, is a new story, but it includes plenty of easter eggs for OG fans to enjoy. (Warning: Some spoilers follow.)

1. Sarah’s Song

One of the earliest callback is Hannah Waddingham’s witch character singing “Garden of Magic,” which was Sarah’s song to lure kids in the first film. Note that it attracts Young Sarah more than Winnie or Mary — now we know where she learned it.

2. The Binx Legend

The story of Emily Binx is retold at Gilbert’s magic shop, tying the 1993 film to the one in 2022, thus ensuring everyone will know the Sanderson sisters when they show up.

3. The Roombas

Mary famously got stuck riding a vacuum in Hocus Pocus when there weren’t enough brooms. She gets an upgrade in the new film with a pair of pet Roombas, while Sarah rides a Swiffer.

4. Amok!

Of course Sarah gets to chant her famous “Amok! Amok! Amok!” the moment Winnifred utters the word in the new film.

5. Gilbert’s Fateful Halloween

Gilbert, who runs a magic store out of the old Sanderson house, revealed himself to be a victim of the first film’s bullies, Jay and Ernie (aka Ice), when he complained about his candy getting stolen as a kid.

6. The Bus Callback

The scene where the Sandersons take the bus in the first film is recalled when the mayor pulls up into his driveway, and Mary regards the car with askance: “Oh, it’s a very small bus.”

Disney

7. The Fourth Wall Break

There was already plenty of footage from the first film, and then fans got a shot of a couple watching the original movie — the scene where the uncredited Garry and Penny Marshall turn up.

Disney

8. Becca’s Max Moment

One of the most famous moments in Hocus Pocus is when Max drinks the potion. Fans assumed when Becca did the same, it would be a similar moment — except it was just a fake-out.

Disney

9. “Buh-bye”

Like Sarah’s “Amok,” Mary get her “Buh-bye” again, as she disappeared after Winnie cast the power spell.
